Bear Creek is located about 10 miles southeast of Fayette. This scenic stream meanders through a valley surrounded by limestone bluffs and tall hills on both sides. Bear creek is stocked only with brown trout.
Bear Creek offers one of Iowa's most relaxing environments for trout fishing. This stream reminds me, in places, more of something you'd expect in Colorado than Iowa. There are numerous places where riffles flow into deep pools with rocks overhanging as the one pictured above. My latest outing to Bear was only for about an hour or so, but I did catch one very nice brown. It was sitting in an eddy off a rocky area much like the one above.
Fishing is best on Bear in the spring and fall. This is one of the streams that is not stocked during the summer due to warmer water temperatures.
