Coon Creek

Coon Creek is located northwest of Decorah and is stocked with only brown and brook trout. This stream holds good numbers of fish year round, as seems to be the case with most of of the brown only streams. On a recent trip to Coon Creek with my dad and uncle I caught an interesting looking fish. It had the markings of a brown on its side and underbelly. I wish I had a camera with me so I could post a picture of this fish. The fish was heavily speckled with the usual black and red dots on a dark green/brownish background. The thing that set this fish apart was that it had the worm pattern of a brook trout on its back. I have read before about a brook/brown hybrid called a tiger trout, but it is usually described as having stripes and looking tiger like. Whatever its genetic makeup it was one of the most beautifully marked fish I've ever caught.

The portions of Coon Creek near the parking lot are pretty heavily fished and consequently the fish are quite spooky. I would recommend walking downstream as far as you would like to go and then working your way back upstream. If you've never fished here before walk near the stream and make mental notes of the places you plan on fishing on the way back up. You don't have to worry about spooking the fish by walking past because they'll be calmed down by the time you get back up to them. Just make sure that on the way back upstream you are quiet and careful where you cast your shadow. Most of the stream is covered by trees making it difficult to take much of a backcast. Spin fishing is the way I prefer to tackle this stream. If you can get your offering into the right spot you can catch some very nice browns that have been in this stream for quite some time.
