Anybody out there using Ultras. I just traded in my 9 ft 5wt Avid four piece rod to St. Croix for the same wt/length in the Ultra line. They have a pretty good trade up policy. Thanks, John

John

The only Ultra I own is an 8'8" Bob Clouser 8wt. I really like that rod. I have thought about trading in my 8 1/2' 2 pc 4wt Avid for an Ultra, but just can't bring myself to do it yet. I also own a 9' 4 pc 6wt Avid with IPC that I am also thinking about trading up for an Ultra. But I have a boo rod that I want to get refurbished first. There is only so much $$$ to go around.

Gillh,
I have a 3wt 3 pcs 7'9"ultra that I love! With this rod and my 4wt Pennington I do all my trout fishing in the midwest. Some times when the weather is right I may use a 2wt that I built some years ago. But the 3wt LU gets out in most of my trout fishing. What I love of this rod is that I can use small streamers, or a rig of 2 nymphs with weight or just a dry fly. In all cases it performs beautifully. It has a medium fast action that I really like. I fish it with a 3wt forward line.
There is no regrets on the money spent in this rod! Even when is not on the very expensive range, it cost several well earned dollars. But I'm very happy with it and fish it a lot!

I just can't get myself to spend that kind of money on a fancy stick (yet I've spent over $1K in the past few months to take purdy pichers)

Actually St. Croix has a formula for trade up . The trade up form a four year old avid to a 2010 ultra was $140. John

Keep you eye on Sportsmans warehouse in Ankeny IA. I don't think they will be business much longer. If the store has a going out of business sale, you might be able to p/u an Advid for $100.00. After that you can gradually move up to an Ultra or an Elite as cash becomes more availble. Also Advids, Ultra's, and Elites are guaranteed for life. I found out is a good deal. I'm hoping Tues to try out my new Ultra.

I went to Sportman's Warehouse Sunday. They are out of St Croix fly rods and will not be receiving any more. It looks like they are selling what inventory is in stock and that is it. I did see a variety of Cortland 333 lines for $23.00.

I believe you're right about Sportsman's. I think it is only a matter of time before they close the door. That or they are going to quit selling fly fishing supplies.

Well I had a chance to try out my new Ultra. I did have a 5wt 2pc Avid with 6wt wf line. I changed to a 4wt 4pc 4wt wf line. The positive: BOY IT SURE CAN CAST A DRY FLY. It was like casting by itself. I swore Robert Redford was narrating evey cast I made. The negative: I have to refigure my casting of streamer type flys. The other bad news, the trout were only hitting on white and black wooly buggers. The white wooly buggers were fine, BUT THE BIG BLACK, Oh my gosh the trout were hauling tail across the stream to get at em. Size 6 or 8 streamers the blacker with flash the better. Oh yea this was up at Trout Run.
