The wife and I are going camping this weekend up at Yellow River State Forest. Any suggestions on places to camp and fish?

If your going to camp in Yellow River State Forest, I would recommend site #136. It is the one furtherest West. It will put you about 50 feet from Little Paint, and also give you the opportunity to walk the stream further West without having to drive/walk a long distance if you camp in the Eastern sites. This site is reservable.

Have fun!

Duggie, Been there done that. That is a nice spot to camp. I imagine the leaves are all gone up there. But should be a nice weekend to camp up there.

I hit little paint with a vengeance this morning!!!! It was slow trying to figure out what they were hitting on but once I did it was fun times. Site 136 is awesome!!!!! I walked up the stream about a half mile and found a great hole! They were fighting hard and nice size too. Nothing was under 13". We ended up camping at Scenic View Campgrounds. We about 30 feet from the stream where we camped. I only fished for about 2 hours but I caught 8. Its amazing up here!

Brandon,
Isn't it beautiful the little paint? I use to fish it very often. but since I moved to DM these waters are a little far, and I only get to fish it once or twice a year. Nevertheless, the little paint is a wonderful area to reconnect with nature and get some bows on the grill.
I enjoy walking upstream until the truck tracks vanish and then a little bit more. I was told by a DNR official that the browns are reproducing in those waters.

I walked up stream from the last camp site and found me a nice hole. On Sunday on our way back to Indianola, We hit up Glovers, Otter and BackBone. I caught 3 at Glovers and finally caught some trout at Back Bone. I got 3 and Back Bone. I have been going up to NE Iowa about 2-3 times a month since Sept. I love it up there. The weather was great to tent camp and the scenery was amazing. I haven't been up to Yellow River since I was really young. Went to visit Pikes Peak SP while we were up there too. Nice view!!

I was up there at the Yellow River Forest the second week of Oct. However I was up there with my lady friend leaf watching. I took her to Cabela's and got her another fishing pole. This one for trout fishing.
Then I took her up to the Yellow River Forest area to show her the Little Paint and the trout stream there. She really liked it. Then I took her up to a look out point overlooking the Big Paint stream and the forest there. A really nice view. I never been there before.
I been dating this gal for quite a while. So while we were up there enjoying the scencery. I asked her to marry me. I didn't have to argue too much or make my case. She said yes and we then shared a bottle of red wine.
When we first got up there and walked down to the over look. A turkey buzzard flew by. I thought to myself, not a good sign. Then a couple of bald eagles came by and that made it better.
Yes the Yellow River Forest is a beautiful place along with the Little Paint. Hopefully me and my gal will be camping up there and fishing come next year.

Dan, I'll echo Duggie... congrats! Graystoke always says birds of prey mean it's going to be a good day on the river.

Well luckily she is a better fishergal than a gardener. But she is willing to do both. I been taking her fishing this past year. She hadn't been fishing for years. She used to go with dad years ago. I told her back in Feb that I had gotten her something round and gold and hopefully would fit her hand. I had gotten her a fishing pole. I guess she had another idea. Blew her away when I stuck a fishing pole in her hand. Been fishing ever since. She is a natural caster. She caught on very easily. We have big plans in the future. Fishing and camping that is.

Way to go coal, really think that one through. Before you know it, there will be little coals running around and fishing will come to an end....j/k

Congrats & what a great place to pop the question. That overlook is a great spot.

Tallgrass, LOL, I don't think I have to worry about having "little coals". Me and my gal are way past that stage in life. We're just into the practice part now.
I have to admit my gal really likes fishing and the outdoors. She even told me that she wants to go shed hunting some day. And she just totally loves my birddogs. As soon as I can teach her how to tie her own fishing knots and clean her fish. I'll be set for life.

Coal,
She sounds like a keeper.
If you tell me she loves the smell of cigars, buys you good Scotch, and ties flies like a pro, my jealosy is going to get the best of me.
Have great times together,
Dan

Dan, well she once told me if I smoke cigars around her. Make sure they are the good ones. She does buy good wine and rum. And she went out and got her "own" tackle box and fishing tackle because she wanted stuff of her own. Even got Fireline for her fishing pole instead of regular mono because she didn't want any more break offs.
